Job Application Tips – Common Mistakes to Avoid (& Tools to Help You Get it Right)

Tired of not hearing back after all the time that you’ve spent on job applications? Our expert team at OLLMOO are offering some tips to help you optimise your job applications. We know the job application journey can be challenging but getting it right can be easy too. Here are some of the most frequent errors applicants make while sending their CV and cover letter, and some suggestions to help you improve.

  1. Failing to customise the resume and cover letter for the job

One of the most typical mistakes that candidates make is submitting a generic resume and cover letter. It's important to tailor your application to the job you're applying for.  Read the job requirements and ensure that you use some of those keywords throughout your application documents too. Check out our social media post to find direct links to these AI tools that will help you create a seamless and impactful CV, cover letter and more.

2. Ignoring the company's culture and values

Take the time to understand the company's culture and value. Research the company's website, social media profiles, and published news articles to learn more about its mission, vision, and values. More importantly, make sure that these align to your personal values to ensure the best possible match.

It also shows that you've done your due diligence and are genuinely interested in the position.

3. Overlooking typos and grammatical errors

Failing to proofread your application before submitting it is not the best first impression. Here at OLLMOO we recognise that we are living in a global landscape where English is not the primary language for all applicants, but we suggest using free online tools like Grammarly to mitigate typos and grammatical mistakes. Microsoft Word also has its own spell-check which can be a great first assist.

4. Disregarding application instructions

Employers typically provide specific instructions on how to apply for a job, such as submitting a resume and cover letter in a particular format, on a particular platform or including specific information in the subject line of an email. Not following these instructions can make you seem not disengaged from the start.  At OLLMOO we ask that potential candidates complete our 30 minutes assessment and provide us with a list of skills. This helps to ensure that your OLLMOO profile includes a portrait of your personality and soft skills alongside your education and experience, helping us to match you to the best roles available.

5. Not using industry-specific language

It's very important to showcase your personality in your application. Use industry-specific terms to demonstrate the depth and breadth of your knowledge but ensure that you also bring enough of your own flair to any application. If every single applicant is bringing the same overly formal language to the journey, your authenticity may be the thing that sets you apart. Do not be afraid to be real.

6. Overcomplicating the application

Some candidates make the mistake of overcomplicating their application. This can involve using a non-standard format for the resume, including too much irrelevant information, or using flashy fonts and colours. Keep your application simple and professional, with clear headings and easy-to-read fonts. Remember, you want to ensure that your application is ATS-ready and detectable.

7. Not addressing the application to the appropriate person

Please do not make this mistake!

Many job postings specify to whom you should address your application. Failure to do so may mean that your application never reaches the consideration pile. Addressing the application to the right person will also show that you've done your research and are genuinely interested in the position.

8. Sending a CV and cover letter via email in a blank email

Sending your application via email in a blank email with no subject or body text can make you appear careless. Take the time to create an effective email with a clear subject line and a brief message introducing yourself and your application. This will show that you've taken the time to prepare a thoughtful application.

Here is an email template to help you:

SUBJECT: Application for [Job Title] Position

Dear [Hiring Manager's Name],

I am writing to express my interest in the [Job Title] position at [Company Name], as advertised on [where you found the job posting]. With my background in [Your Field or Key Skills], I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to your team. I feel strongly that my skillset matches the requirements of this role well.

Attached are my CV and cover letter for your review. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how my experiences align with the current needs of your team.

Thank you for considering my application.

Best regards,

[Your Full Name]
[Your LinkedIn Profile]

9. Attaching too many things to your application

Unless asked for, attaching additional documents to your application can overshadow your CV and cover letter. Only attach documents that are relevant to the job and that showcase your skills and experience. If you've been asked for a portfolio or writing examples, attach the most appropriate ones to the job and limit the number of attachments. Ensure that all links work before submitting your application especially if you struggle with unpredictable internet connections.

10. Asking for feedback too soon

While it's essential to show your interest in the position, make sure that you give the employer sufficient time to review your application before following up. A good rule of thumb is to wait a week before checking in.

The job application process can be competitive, and mistakes can cost you the opportunity to secure the position. However, by following these simple tips and taking the time to customise your application, you can increase your chances of standing out and impressing the employer.

Always demonstrate your professionalism and commitment to the role; it will help you get one step closer to advancing your career. And if you’re a member of the OLLMOO community then do not hesitate to reach out to our talent team for your free 30-minute consultation with recruitment experts.
