This week’s notable highlight is Tasnika Goorhoo, an incredible woman with an incredible story. Tasnika is a Senior Technical Research Analyst at S&P Global, a public speaker with TEDxYouth@Cape Town, a Future Females Cape Town ambassador, and an advocate for women in STEM. It’s safe to say that Tasnika has done and is doing so much to pave the way for young girls and women who want to pursue a career in STEM, and we hope you find her story as enriching and valuable as we do.
My journey began in the rural town of Bergville, South Africa, where opportunities were limited. My family made sacrifices which allowed me to attend boarding school, as there were no secondary schools in my hometown. This pivotal transition instilled in me resilience, adaptability, and a strong sense of independence. Since then, I have consistently focused on continuous learning and gaining valuable education. I have taken on leadership roles in various women's networks, advocating for diversity and inclusion. My journey has shaped me into a resilient, determined individual committed to creating pathways for others and driving meaningful change in my community and beyond. I look forward to leveraging my experiences to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders.
One of my key accomplishments is earning an Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering, making me the first in my family to complete university. This milestone was significant, as I lacked role models in my field, especially strong female leaders of colour in STEM. However, this absence of representation fuelled my determination to succeed and inspire others. I wanted to show young girls from similar backgrounds that they could achieve their dreams.
Some of the main challenges I have faced, included being the only person of colour in my boarding school hostel, which taught me to navigate social dynamics and foster understanding among diverse peers. Because of this experience however, I am all the more dedicated to empowering women and girls in STEM through initiatives like S&P Global's WINS people resource group and my role in the Lean In Network Southern Africa.
As you embark on your journey in STEM, remember that your path is uniquely yours, shaped by your experiences and aspirations. Embrace the challenges you encounter, for they are not obstacles but stepping stones to growth. The tough environments you may face will teach you resilience and adaptability. In those moments of uncertainty, find strength in seeking mentorship. Reach out to those who have walked the path before you; their guidance can become a lifeline, illuminating the way forward. Don’t hesitate to champion diversity and inclusion.
Your voice matters, so use it to uplift others, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. Creating an inclusive environment not only benefits individuals but also fosters innovation and progress in our industry. Stay curious and committed to continuous learning. The STEM field is ever-evolving, and by embracing new ideas and knowledge, you'll be better equipped to tackle its complexities. Above all, believe in yourself and your ability to make a difference. You hold the power to shape the future and inspire those around you. Trust your instincts and share your ideas boldly. Your contributions can lead to meaningful change, and together, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future for all. As you take your first steps, approach each day with passion and purpose, knowing that the journey ahead is filled with potential and promise.
In collaborating with OLLMOO in 2025, I am most excited about the opportunity to amplify our shared mission of empowering women and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in leadership roles. I look forward to working together to create initiatives that not only support the professional development of women but also drive meaningful change in society.
