Navigating a career in a male-dominated industry takes resilience, determination, and an unshakable sense of purpose. Our Social Media and Marketing Lead, Tara Formosa, had the opportunity to sit down with Mounia Attiga, an incredible Energy and Sustainability strategist who is paving the way for other women wanting to pursue a career in her field.

Mounia shares the defining moments of her career journey, the challenges she faced as a woman in a male-dominated space, and the strategies she used to get to where she is today. Her story is not only inspiring but also a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of creating spaces for women to lead and succeed.

Tell us everything about who Mounia Attiga is.

I’m Mounia Attiga, an Energy and Sustainability Strategist, and I’ve had the privilege of leading and shaping the future of the energy sector for over two decades. Today, I’m honoured to be recognised as one of the Top 50 Most Influential Female Leaders in the Pan-African energy industry, and I proudly serve as the Chair of Lean In North Africa Leaders Network. My career has been driven by a deep commitment to sustainability, renewables investments, digital transformation, and capacity building, all aimed at advancing energy solutions that can create lasting impact.

What are some of your key accomplishments throughout your career and what are some milestones that have brought you to where you are today?

Throughout my journey, I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s most renowned companies, including Schlumberger, Shell, Vodafone, and GemInvest. In each role, I’ve sought to bridge divides, whether that’s connecting investors to opportunities in the EMENA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa), managing major energy accounts at Vodafone, or leading Shell’s global initiatives on digital transformation, decarbonization, and sustainability. My work has always been centred around finding innovative solutions that drive business development, foster partnerships, and support a sustainable energy future.

What challenges have you faced and overcome throughout your career?

The road hasn’t been without its challenges. Breaking through in male-dominated industries and navigating cross-cultural complexities has taught me resilience and the importance of inclusive leadership. As the chair of Lean In North Africa, I’m dedicated to creating opportunities for women in the energy sector and ensuring that the next generation of leaders has a platform to thrive. Being part of organisations like the Arab International Women’s Forum and the Society of Petroleum Engineering, among others, has allowed me to champion gender equality, international trade, and sustainability on a global scale. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, but I’m even more excited about what lies ahead in the pursuit of a more sustainable and equitable energy future.

What advice would you give to young professionals just starting in your industry?

My advice to young professionals just starting in the energy and sustainability industry, and specifically to women, would be to stay curious, be adaptable, and never underestimate the power of networking and collaboration. The energy sector is full of opportunities and is evolving at an incredible pace, driven by digital transformation, sustainability goals, and new technologies. It’s a space that requires constant learning, so always seek out opportunities to expand your knowledge, whether through formal education, industry events, or simply by staying informed about the latest trends. Don’t be afraid to take risks and step outside your comfort zone. The challenges you face will help shape your growth, and resilience is key in this industry.

You might encounter obstacles or setbacks along the way – whether it’s dealing with complex projects, navigating male-dominated spaces, or learning how to balance sustainability with business objectives – but these are the experiences that will ultimately make you stronger and more capable. Also, build relationships early on. The energy sector is highly collaborative, and the connections you make today can be invaluable tomorrow. Surround yourself with mentors and peers who will challenge and support you. The industry is incredibly diverse, with many paths to take, so be open to new opportunities and seek out roles where you can make a real impact. Lastly, remember that sustainability isn’t just a buzzword – it’s at the heart of everything we do now. If you’re passionate about driving change and creating a positive impact, you’ll find endless opportunities to make a difference. Stay committed, stay curious, and keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Apart from the Mounia Attiga we see on LinkedIn, what makes you, you?

I’m a proud mother of two – my daughter Waad, who graduated as a lawyer, and my son Ahmed, who’s graduating this year in politics and economics. They inspire me every day. Outside of work, I love travelling, discovering new cultures, and meeting new people. Their stories and experiences motivate me and remind me of how powerful diverse perspectives can be. For me, having a sense of purpose is essential, but I also believe it’s just as important to enjoy what you do. Life is all about balance, and finding joy in both your work and personal experiences makes the journey so much more fulfilling.

We’d like to finish by saying a resounding “thank you” to Mounia for taking the time to share her experience and career journey with us. We hope that her insights and story inspire our OLLMOO community as much as they do us, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to have learnt so much from her outstanding journey.
