Can an AI Career Coach Really Help Your Career?

Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we live, work, and even think. From recommending the fastest route to work to suggesting the next book we might enjoy, AI touches almost every part of our daily lives. You might ask: Can an AI career coach guide your career as effectively as a human coach can? The short answer: yes and no. Today, let’s explore what AI can do, what it can’t, and where human expertise still matters.

What an AI Career Coach Can Do

AI-powered career coaches, like ChatGPT and other large language models, have some impressive strengths. According to Harvard Business Review, using the right prompts, AI can help you reflect on your goals, brainstorm career options, and even structure actionable plans.

Katie Parrott, in her experiment detailed in Working Overtime, tried using ChatGPT as her personal career coach after losing her job. She found that AI was incredibly responsive: it never tires, it remembers previous conversations (if memory features are enabled), and it can quickly generate ideas for next steps, from preparing for interviews to exploring alternative career paths.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Immediate Availability: AI is always “in session,” ready to provide guidance whenever you need it.
  • Structured Reflection: It asks thoughtful questions to help clarify your skills, strengths, and career aspirations.
  • Idea Generation: AI can suggest roles, industries, or skill-building exercises you might not have considered.
  • Cost-Effective: For those unable to afford a human coach, AI provides a low-cost way to gain initial guidance.

With these capabilities, an AI career coach can help you organise your thoughts, plan actionable steps, and brainstorm career options.

What an AI Career Coach Can’t Do

However, while AI can be a useful tool, it has important limitations. Harvard Business Review and Parrott’s experience make it clear: AI cannot replace the empathy, accountability, and nuanced judgment of a human coach.

Some limitations include:

  • Emotional Intelligence: AI can simulate understanding, but it cannot truly sense your feelings or motivations.
  • Personalised Accountability: A human coach can push you, check in consistently, and adapt advice based on subtle life changes.
  • Contextual Judgement: AI may provide generic advice or over-rely on patterns in its data. It may not fully grasp your industry nuances, company culture, or personal constraints. As a result, AI guidance can sometimes mislead you or send you down fewer effective paths.
  • Complex Career Strategy: Decisions like negotiating a promotion, pivoting industries, or navigating office politics require human insight. A coach, especially a certified one or someone with recruitment experience, can provide personalised guidance because they understand strategies and how to apply them to your unique situation. AI, on the other hand, can only provide general information, which may be outdated or not fully relevant to your specific context and experience.

In short, AI is an excellent co-pilot, which can help with research or brainstorming, but real career navigation still needs human expertise, emotional intelligence, and judgment.

OM Career Coaching

This is where professional career coaching really shines. At OLLMOO, we combine structured coaching with the flexibility you need. Unlike AI, our coaches provide empathy, accountability, and guidance tailored to your unique journey.

We offer three programmes designed to meet specific career goals:

  • Get Interviews – refine your CV, applications, and networking strategies to land more opportunities.
  • Land the Offer – develop confidence, negotiation strategies, and skills to secure the role you want.

Each programme runs for 2–6 weeks, includes 5 interactive sessions, and offers flexible scheduling to fit your lifestyle.

The Bottom Line

An AI career coach can help you reflect, generate ideas, and structure your career thinking.  However, when it comes to truly navigating the messy, deeply human aspects of career growth, nothing beats a professional coach. Think of AI as your brainstorming partner, great for getting started and generating ideas, but consider a human coach as your true navigator, guiding you with personalised strategies, experience, and insight.
