The workplace has new rules.

Hybrid and remote working have become more popular and sought-after in all forms of employment internationally. But with them comes a new set of challenges and barriers that new recruits face daily... Here are 6 considerations to make ahead of joining your new working environment.

Navigating virtual onboarding

Congratulations, you’ve got the job and now you need to start your virtual onboarding into a new team and with a new group of colleagues. It is a great idea to create an introductory image for yourself. Sharing a few personal, but work-related, facts about yourself to allow your new team to get to know who you are beyond your job title and role. Including insights into your hobbies, your personal interests and career milestones would be the perfect first encounter.

First impressions (make your mark)

You won’t be meeting anyone in person, so your radiant personality may need a few physical enhancements to shine through. Find the best lighting and an ergonomic workspace for your online meetings. Be aware of your body language and remember to smile. Most importantly, don’t try too hard and always consider your background and dress code; especially in those first online encounters when all cameras are likely to be on.

Build relationships

Now, more than ever before, it is of utmost importance that you establish yourself as a great communicator and relationship builder in your new environment. Reach out to your colleagues for collaborative working opportunities, introduce yourself to co-workers beyond your immediate team, and be open to sharing insights, feedback and recommendations when it is appropriate to do so. Build a strong, active online presence and be responsive to the best of your ability.

Overcome isolation: stay connected

Working remotely can become lonely at times and the feeling of isolation is never pleasant. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is vital. Setting time and work-related boundaries upfront will save you much anxiety in the future. As far as possible, try to attend team-building outings and work lunches because, at the end of the day, the power of physical contact is unmatched. DO NOT become an island in the stream.
